Literary Terms & Techniques: Focusing on Figurative Language

Figurative Language: language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. When a writer uses literal language, he or she is simply stating the facts as they are. Some examples of types of figurative language: Simile Metaphor Personification Hyperbole Alliteration

SIMILE Definition: a comparison of two unlike things using the words “like” or “as” to create an effect Example: She floated like a feather across the dance the floor.

METAPHOR: Definition: a comparison of two unlike things without using the words “like” or “as” to create an effect Example: That linebacker is a bear!

The Hunt Is On… In small groups, you will be asked to find any examples of similes and metaphors in a particular paragraph of “My Name”. Record the examples your group finds. Write the effect created by each. Be prepared to share with the class :o)
