Slant rhymes Words that do not EXACTLY rhyme. Chill/Tulle

Figurative Language Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation. When a writer uses literal language, he or she is simply stating the facts as they are. Figurative language, in comparison, uses exaggerations or alterations to make a particular linguistic point. Figurative language is very common in poetry, but is also used in prose and nonfiction writing as well. Types- Simile, metaphor, hyperbole, personification

Imagery Visually descriptive or figurative language, esp. in a literary work

Essential Truths When you focus on life’s real meaning.
Love, loss, Joy, death

Personification Giving non-human objects human like characteristics.
Example: The moon was smiling down on us.

Rhythm Rhythm refers to the pattern of sounds made by varying the stressed and unstressed syllables in a poem

Simile A figure of speech that compares two things that have something in common, using like or as.

Metaphor A figure of speech that compares two things directly, without using like or as.

Paradox a statement whose two parts seem contradictory yet make sense with more thought. Christ used paradox in his teaching: "They have ears but hear not." Or in ordinary conversation, we might use a paradox, "Deep down he's really very shallow." Paradox attracts the reader's or the listener's attention and gives emphasis.

Paradox Review Paradox: a statement that seems to contradict itself but may nevertheless suggest an important truth. Identify a paradox in “Success is counted sweetest”, “Much Madness is divinest Sense,” and “My Life had stood-a Loaded Gun-.” What truth does each paradox convey?
