Henry VII

The Story So Far Two branches of the royal family fought over the monarchy Kings came and went with every battle England was weakened after the civil war The traditional method of ascending to the monarchy was changed Kings were made based on the size of their forces as opposed to the strength of their claim

The Battle of Bosworth When the two rivals for the throne met at the field of Bosworth a great conflict ensued When Richard III died on the field, Henry VII ascended to the throne Once again proving that killing the previous monarch and installing ones self as king to be the most efficient method of attaining kingship

Policy of Dynastic Extermination This practice of violently securing ones place as king continued during Henry VII’s reign He murdered two rebels who had better claim to the throne He secured his dynasty through eliminating the legitimate heirs to the throne

How Henry VII became King Killed Richard III to become king Won the battle of bosworth because nobles abandoned Richard III Not because of personal charisma or shrewd statesmanship Had support of the French Monarch Married Elizabeth York to unite the houses

HENRY VII Had a weak claim to the throne and was not the only possible claimant Did not have ‘Plantagenet’ blood (strong relation to Edward II) Fled from England Was raised overseas Was not a charismatic person
