Learning Targets “I Can…” -List the four atoms that make up the four macromolecules. -Distinguish between a monomer and polymer. -List the four macromolecules and name the monomer for each. -Describe the role of proteins in living organisms. -Build the four macromolecules, both on paper and with molecular models, to contrast the structures of the four macromolecules.

Building the Macromolecules Studying the Chemistry of Carbon

Carbon Has only four valence (outer shell) electrons so it has four places to bond with other atoms. Carbon = Black

Hydrogen Has only one valence electron; it wants one more giving it one place for atoms to bond. Hydrogen = White

Oxygen Has six valence electrons leaving it with two places to bond other atoms. Oxygen = Red

Glucose Create glucose using the carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Glucose = C 6 H 12 O 6

Polymerization of Glucose Glucose is a MONOMER. It is a smaller molecule that serves as a subunit for a bigger molecule called a POLYMER. The chemical reaction to join monomers is called polymerization; it is also known as DEHYDRATION SYNTHESIS because water must be removed.
