A system for managing and processing information, usually computer-based. Also, a functional group within a business that manages the development and operations. of the business’s information. Definition of information system Classifications of information system  Transaction Processing Systems (TPS)  Decision Support Systems (DSS)  Expert Information Systems (EIS)  Management Information Systems (MIS)  Office Automation Systems (OAS)

 Transaction Processing Systems (TPS) designed to process routine transactions efficiently and accurately. A business will have several (sometimes many).  Decision Support Systems (DSS) designed to help management make decisions in situations where there is uncertainty about the possible outcomes of those decisions.  Executive Support Systems (ESS) It gathers, analyses and summarizes the key internal and external information used in the business.

 Management Information Systems (MIS) Take data from the transaction processing systems (see below) and summarize it into a series of management reports.  Office Automation Systems (OAS) improve the productivity of employees who need to process data Types of information system  Informal Information System  Formal Information System

Benefits of information system  Central access  Easy backup  Central distribution of information  Easy record-keeping  Easy tax preparation  Easy customer trait identification

Disadvantages of information system  Limited functionality, by design  Information overload for some managers  Benefits hard to quantify  System may become slow, large, and hard to manage  Need good internal processes for data management  May lead to less reliable and less secure data  System dependent
