Capitalization: Common and Proper Nouns and Adjectives

To capitalize means to begin a word with a capital letter. Letters are capitalized for many different reasons, such as: 1. To begin a sentence. 2. To identify proper nouns. 3. To identify proper adjectives. 4. To give yourself credit. The letter “I” is always capitalized.

1. Capital letters are used to begin a sentence. Examples: The students were excited to complete their research projects. Where did you go after school yesterday? Watch out for that car. Yea! The semester is almost over.

2. Capitals are used to identify proper nouns. What is the difference between common and proper nouns? Common nouns identify classes of people, places or things. Proper nouns name specific examples of people, places or things. List some common and proper nouns on your word wall.

3. Capitals are used to identify proper adjectives. An adjective is used to describe a person, place or thing. A proper adjective is either an adjective formed from a proper noun or a proper noun used as an adjective.

2 types of proper adjectives Proper adjectives formed from proper nouns include: Australian kangaroo European settlers American car African nations Proper nouns used as adjectives include: the Senate floor Ford truck Shakespeare festival Swiss chocolate What proper noun did these originate from?

Do not capitalize a common noun used with 2 proper adjectives. Ex. Mississippi River > Mississippi and Ohio rivers Washington Street > Washington and Madison streets Use capital letters for titles only: with a proper nameex. Mrs. Riley as a proper nameex. General

Relatives are often referred to by titles, but are only capitalized when used with the person’s name or a proper name. Ex. Uncle Frank He says that Grandmother enjoys gardening, too.
