2 A noun is a word that names a person, place, or thing.

3 A Common Noun: names any person, place, or thing. Examples: sister, library, house

4 A Proper Noun names a specific person, place, or thing. Mrs. Hollowell Pizza Inn Jolly Ranchers

5 Proper Nouns:  Always begin with capital letters  If it has more than one word, each important word begins with a capital letter

6 Common and Proper Nouns Common nouns can name people: girl, man, doctor Proper nouns can name people: Lisa, Mr. Carter, Dr. Smith

7 Common and Proper Nouns Common nouns can name places: state, city, and park. Proper nouns can name places: Kentucky, Paducah, and Noble Park.

8 Common and Proper Nouns Words such as day, month, and holiday are common nouns. Words such as Monday, September, and Labor Day are proper nouns.

9 Proper Nouns Each word in a proper noun should be capitalized. Capitalize proper nouns that name specific people: Susan, Senator Jones, and Mrs. Weaver.

10 Proper Nouns Capitalize proper nouns that name specific places: New York, Central Park, and Wall Street.

11 Proper Nouns Capitalize proper nouns that name specific days and months: Friday, October, and Halloween.
