struggles since 1990 – Russia had a free election an attempted coup against Gorbachev failed, the Soviet republics declared their independence from the U.S.S.R. The U.S.S.R. simply ceased to exist. The Confederation of Independent States (CIS) has replaced the U.S.S.R. But is very weak. All of the former republics are switching from communism to capitalism and from dictatorships to democracy, it has been a rough switch.
