1600’s C.E. Peter I – The Great comes to power, focus on modernizing Russia, increased territory, built city of St. Petersburg

Romanov family comes to power, continues Russian expansion in Eastern Europe, brought many non-Russians under their control

Czar Alexander II – limited reforms, mass migration from rural areas to cities
Czar Alexander III – finally expand into Siberia, construction of Trans-Siberian Railroad completed in 1916

During WWI, Russian factory workers staged many strikes to protest conditions and hardships, called for “bread and freedom”
Revolution begins in 1917, Russia is forced out of WWI, Czar Nicholas and the Romanov family are murdered, end of Europe’s last absolute monarch
