Looking Forward to Richard P. Barth Dean and Professor Faculty and Staff Welcome September 1, 2010

Jay Perman MD So sorry that I had to cancel out on you. I’ll make it up to you by granting your dean anything he asks of me for the next year!

President Perman Initiatives Re Branding the Campus – “ University of Maryland Baltimore” is passe – “University of Maryland” is current – Maryland Seals are history—but the dome may be back!

Childhood Obesity Most significant health problem in US – Identified this before Michelle Obama! – Needs and interdisciplinary response – Prevention in schools is critical

Interprofessional Education Wants everyone to know people in other professions President’s clinic will have doctors, nurses, and social workers involved He is already impressed by what we do

Strategic Planning Pete Gilbert will lead Has already started and will wrap up in late winter or spring of 2011 SSW should consider completing a strategic plan in spring of next year that builds on the campus strategic plan

Accountability Indicators of Progress Evaluation of Administrators Budget Hearings

Community Engagement Excited about Promise Heights Supports the development of an initiative related to work in pre K-12 Wants community services to be multidisciplinary

Development Oriented Putting aside a day a week for development Already had a dinner and breakfast with Dave and I and Stelios Spiliadis MSW (‘67) to discuss development of a gala event to honor the SSW

Faculty and Staff Support End to furloughs and temporary salary reductions Try to squeeze out a COLA Merits would be great

“Be Nice” Civility is not only pleasant but it is an imperative in providing effective professional care – Listening carefully – Giving the quality of relationships priority – Concentrating on “being nice” to everyone

Chancellor Kirwan
