Women’s Clothing Constricted Their Lives

A Woman’s Place in the 19 th Century Women could not have careers. Had to obey fathers, husbands, and brothers. Could be beaten if they did something to anger their father, husband, or brother. Received less education than males. Women’s sole purpose was to marry and have children. All of the women’s possessions belonged to her father or her husband when she married.

19 th Century Fashion – Social Classes The poor dressed in what was almost rags.

Housing - Social Classes The wealthier classes lived in very lavish homes.

Social Classes – People from different classes did not mix socially. The aristocracy did not even need to work for a living. Their wealth was inherited. The merchant class could be quite wealthy, but they were looked down on by the aristocracy because they were “in trade.” They manufactured goods and shipped them around the world for trade.

Social Classes Small business and shop owners were below the merchants, and were not as wealthy. Laborers were below the merchants and just made enough to live on. The poor were usually sent into the streets to beg or were put into poor houses. They often turned to crime to survive.

Social Classes - Wealthy The aristocracy and merchant classes could afford lavish homes and goods.

Social Classes – Small Business A small business or shop owner might own nice but less fancy furniture and goods.

Social Classes - Laborers Laborer class would make do with very basic and simple furniture.

Social Classes- The Poor The poor had to beg to survive. They often lived on the streets or were sent to poor houses.

19 th Century Sailing Ships Sailing ships were used in the navy as well as to transport goods around the world.

Sailing could be very rough. Sometimes crews had to sail through hurricanes.

19 th Century Sailors This is a group of fairly reputable sailors, often they were undernourished and very worn out people because of the lives they led.
