Behaviour & Attendance Participation in the National Programme for Specialist Leaders of Behaviour and Attendance (NPSLBA) will be increased and with a focus on leadership skills, linked to programme priorities NPSLBA The National Strategies Annual Plan Summary 2008–09

Behaviour & Attendance What is it? The NPSLBA provides leadership training in behaviour and attendance (B&A). The programme offers qualifications and creates career pathways for the growing number of specialists who work in the field of B&A. NPSLBA

Behaviour & Attendance Who is it for? Anyone who impacts on the B&A of young learner, from a variety of different settings, not all of which are professionals are teachers. They (participants) work in varied settings: in mainstream or special schools or units; in primary or secondary schools and as LEA officers. All have a leadership role in B&A as part of their work or they aspire to become such leaders NPSLBA

Behaviour & Attendance Whats in it for: the participants? Extensive CPD opportunities, a chance to meet and work with a variety of different colleagues from other agencies, share good practice, increased confidence and skills based strategies for dealing with the behaviour and attendance of children and young people. the school? The school will be directly and positively improved through the promotion of distributive leadership of its community, which in turn encourages participants to understand their role within the B&A agenda, how to practically engage with young learner and support other members of the school community. NPSLBA

Behaviour & Attendance What are the benefit for young learners? The NPSLBA programme supports the Behaviour, Attendance and SEAL Programmes strand of the National Strategies as part of the core offer to local authorities, schools and other settings. These in turn support the national outcomes for children in relation to the Every Child Matters agenda (ECM) by focusing on the following: Developing Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning (SEAL) Reducing persistent absence (PA Agenda) Promoting anti-bullying strategies Improving behaviour (IB Agenda) Raising attainment Encouraging parental responsibility NPSLBA

Behaviour & Attendance What is the structure of the programme? The year long programme is delivered through self-tutored cluster groups, supported and guided by the LA. Each cluster group decides on its own learning path, dependent on prior experience and interests, using learning materials available on the web or from other sources. The programme is planned and organised to support and enhance current work, through a self-reflection learning model and active learning in the workplace. During this year-long programme, participants will attend three study days and will take turns in facilitating up to ten self-directed twilight study sessions. Participants will also be expected to undertake home study. NPSLBA

Behaviour & Attendance Work Based Activities A minimum of three over the year Apply learning and theory in the workplace from all aspects of the programme Use current practice and/or new ideas from study topics One reflective log to be drafted by Study Day 2 linked to learning objectives and brought to the day NPSLBA

Behaviour & Attendance Cluster sessions Meet ten times over the year long programme Eight self tutored study topics facilitated or co facilitated by each member of the cluster Two sessions to be used for sharing practice, reviewing and refining reflective logs, portfolio completion etc NPSLBA

Behaviour & Attendance Accreditation and Assessment Participants work towards the DCSF NPSLBA Certificate and are required to submit evidence of attendance, work-based learning activities, and reflective logs. The programme is moderated by the local authority and/or the Regional Adviser. Further accreditation, including City and Guilds qualifications, Foundation degrees, Post Graduate Certificates and a Masters degree are available to encourage CPD. NPSLBA

Behaviour & Attendance What is the portfolio for the DCSF Certificate? The portfolio still should contain reflective logs for: Three cluster sessions including leading or co-leading a session Three work based activities with evidence Final reflection on personal development and impact in the workplace Witness statement Portfolios need to demonstrate that participants have met the learning objectives and covered the five domains NPSLBA

Behaviour & Attendance So what commitment is required? From Participants? An obligation to attend all study days and cluster sessions. A commitment to undertake work based activities, reflective logs and relevant research. From the workplace? Your workplace will need to commit to support you during the programme. NPSLBA

Behaviour & Attendance What qualifications/former knowledge is needed? There are no formal entry requirements, apart from a desire to develop leadership skills and to work collaboratively with others. NPSLBA
