Welcome Parents to Ms. Gill’s Regent’s Earth Science class! While we wait for more parents to arrive, please sign in and fill out the survey. Thank you!

Survey Forms Please take a free period you have tonight to finish filling out the survey. Place forms in the “Feed ME” bin located on the desk in the hall when finished.

I love Geology & I love to teach !!! My research focuses on Carolina Bay  Formations on Long Island During the summer, I work as the GeoPREP High School Research Coordinator based out of Stony Brook University

This year your student will explore and understand Earth and Space phenomena that we normally take for granted.

So what does it mean to be in an REGENTS level course? -This is a rigorous and fast paced course that is normally taken in 10 th grade. -The grades received in class will appear on your child’s HS transcript. -However they are NOT weighted as an honors class.

When picturing a Mountain… this is what most students think of….

But your child in Earth Science will now have to think of it like this too…

NYS LAB HOURS REQUIREMENT. Students love the interactive and hands-on activities. Also they reinforce key concepts In order to be eligible to take this exam a student must complete a minimum of 1200 lab minutes, equivalent to about 30 lab reports.

Understanding the Dropping Procedure: There are THREE Windows of time ROUND ONE -Decision made on or before Thursday November 6 th -Students will begin Science 8 on Monday November 10 th (start of quarter 2). ROUND TWO -Decision made on or before Wednesday January 28th -Students will begin Science 8 on Friday January 30 th (start of quarter 3). FINAL DROP DATE Final decision MUST be made on or before February 15 th Students will begin Science 8 on Tuesday February 24th.

Remind101 SAFE TO USE~ Students and Parents cannot see the teacher’s personal phone number, but rather they see a computer generator phone number. Students cannot write back to the teacher, therefore this is NOT a messaging tool. The student’s personal number is kept confidential as well, meaning the teacher cannot see the students’ personal number.

Remind 101- Trilobites & Tsunami’s

Remind 101- Supernova’s

Tests (60%) Quizzes (25%) Labs (10%) Homework (5%) Although our point systems my vary, ALL EARTH SCIENCE TEACHERS FOLLOW this percent-wise grading break down to ensure equity among teachers Detailed Progress Reports will be sent home twice a quarter. See student Point Chart for current averages. Exams and quizzes are the best indicator of a student’s performance on the NYS Regents I expect each student to achieve mastery level understanding evident by a 85% minimum average

Extra Help I will be available for extra help almost every Thursday morning beginning at 7:30 am. I will also be available after school for an hour before a big exam If your student cannot meet during the regular extra help times we can work out another time such as during lunch periods.

I do this with some help from the Draw-O-Fun

Goal Setting! To achieve something in life… you must plan to achieve it so we will begin by setting goals I plan to help students become goal setters, teaching them to develop a plan to achieve. This will include ways to improve study habits, reading skills and test taking skills.

All late assignments are placed in the Feed me box! Students can find lost or missed work in the Make-Up work bin.

Let’s Look at my WebsiteWebsite

Welcome Parents to Core Extension with Ms. Gill DO NOW: Think about the following question What would you try if you knew you could not fail?

What is Core Extension? Ms. Gill Core Extension is a safe place to: Ask questions Share ideas and experiences Practice study skills and etiquette Explore scientific ideas and theories Examine scientific articles and media Not all students have core extension.

-A study hall -A review of Earth Science -A review of Science 8 -A free period -A place to do homework Core Extension is NOT…

What topics are explored? Study skills Citizenship Scientific Method Why is the sky blue? Map making Star gazing Moon gazing Rock collecting Weather reporting Climate watch scientific predictions and conclusions Measuring practice Fossil Fuels Greenhouse effect Invasive species Current events (world/school/home) Ecology-food webs

Grading Core Extension is a Pass or Fail course There is no HW Students simply have to keep a journal documenting our topic of the day. Journals will be checked quarterly for completeness

Welcome Parents to Science 8 class! While we wait for more parents to arrive, please sign in and fill out the survey. Thank you!

This year your student will explore and understand Earth and Space phenomena that we normally take for granted.

Expectations! I expect each student to achieve and maintain high standards for their work and behavior as outlined in the “Classroom Procedures” list. Detailed Progress Reports will be sent home twice a quarter. See student Point Chart for current averages.

NYS Intermediate Level Science Exam (ILS) This year your student will take a NYS exam that covers 6 th -8 th science curriculum. We will review extensively for this exam using several resources.

Labs are the best part of Science. Students love the interactive and hands-on activities. Also they reinforce key concepts

Grading Policies Tests (50%, 200 pts): about 2 per quarter, approximately 100 points each Quizzes (20%, 100 pts): about 4 per quarter, approximately points each Labs (15%, 75 pts): about 5 per quarter, each worth 15 points per lab depending on scope of lab. Late labs will be penalized 10% per day, and pink slips will be completed and filed. Homework (15%, 75pts): about 15 per quarter, each counts 6 points per fully completed and on time assignment. Late assignments will only be accepted if due to an excused absence.

Extra Help I will be available for extra help almost every Thursday morning beginning at 7:30 am. I will also be available after school for an hour before a big exam If your student cannot meet during the regular extra help times we can work out another time such as during lunch periods.

You can find all assignments here  & on my Eboard too!
