Welcome to First Grade’s Curriculum Night

Standards Our curriculum is based on Georgia Common Core Standards. Standards can be found on the Cherokee County website:

First Grade Math Curriculum Number Sense is HUGE concept in 1 st grade! Addition concepts (single and double digit without regrouping) Subtraction concepts (single and double digit without regrouping) Basic Fractions Time (to the hour and half hour) Data & Graphing

First Grade Math Curriculum What is Number Sense? mes/100-number-chart-zero.html

Did You Know? We use a hands- on approach to teach basic math concepts. Math can be very fun and exciting! We have also incorporated cooperative learning groups and games !

OUR READING PROGRAM  Reading Guided Reading and literacy centers AR –goals Focus Skills: Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, Expanding Vocabulary, & Story Elements

 Our new spelling program’s main push is spelling for MASTERY not memorization.  3 parts  1. Phonics  2. High frequency written words “Red Words”  3. Dictation Sentence

SIGHT WORDS There are 220 words that first graders should read WITHOUT sounding them out. Sight words should be practiced at home for mastery.

Writing Three genres of writing will be the focus for first grade. *Narrative *Informative (facts/how-to) *Persuasive (opinion) Phonetic spelling is expected, but any tested “Red Words” should be spelled correctly in context. Students will learn how to go through each step of the writing process from prewriting to publishing. C.O.P.S.

Unit Study Unit Studies are based on Science, Social Studies, Health, and Special Occasion Days. Science and Social Studies curriculum follows the Cherokee County Standards.

SPECIALS Students go to specials each day from 11:15-12:00. Please refer to the specials schedule that was sent home earlier this year. Specials areas include: ART Students MUST wear tennis shoes to participate in P.E. activities. MUSIC COUNSELING P.E. STEM

 Homework will be sent home weekly and should be completed and returned on Friday mornings.  Homework should take an average of 30 minutes a night in addition to 20 minutes of reading a night as stated by Cherokee County guidelines.  This year, we want the students to practice math at home as much as they practice reading.  All homework is a direct reinforcement or continuation of class work. Homework

What items should go back and forth between home and school? BINDER Agenda & gold folder AR folder library books

The Agenda  Please write on the right side of the agenda only. The students are to use the lines on the left for their daily sentence.  On Mondays, your child will write his/her spelling words in the space provided.  Clear pocket of the agenda should be used for:  Loose notes  Money (make sure it is labeled with all necessary information)

Snacks Your child may bring a snack to school each day. Please send in one healthy snack! Please send ONLY water bottles with snack. Juice boxes and flavored water are too sticky and can attract insects.

LUNCH  Visitors are welcome.  If you come to visit your child at lunch, please note that you may only pull your own child to the overflow table.  For safety reasons, we ask that you do not take your child out of the cafeteria, or share food with other children in the class (birthdays are the exception).
