2 Welcome to Kindergarten!  Please ask any general questions you may have.  If you have any questions specific to your child’s academic success please schedule an individual conference.

7 Reminders Please pack a healthy snack everyday. Please wear sneakers on Gym days. Please return Library books on time. Please dress your child appropriately for the weather.

10 Fundations  Systematic and explicit phonics instruction effective for all children.  Provides a systematic and explicit approach to reading and spelling with phonics.  We will combine this instruction with the reading of good literature, which is just as important for your child’s development.

11 Fundations  Fundations is systematic because it follows a definite sequence for teaching and it follows a very definite procedure to teach those concepts.  Fundations is explicit because it teaches all concepts directly. The children will review letters and learn how to form these letters. They will learn sounds using keywords to help them remember. They will soon move on to blend the sounds into words. Fundations introduces many aspects of word and sentence structure.

13 Math Grade K Overview  Counting and Cardinality Know number names and the count sequence. Count to tell the number of objects. Compare numbers.  Operations and Algebraic Thinking Understand addition as putting together and adding to, and understand subtraction as taking apart and taking from.  Number and Operations in Base Ten Work with numbers 11–19 to gain foundations for place value.  Measurement and Data Describe and compare measurable attributes. Classify objects and count the number of objects in categories.  Geometry Identify and describe shapes. Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes. Common Core Standards

14 Science  Students go to the science classroom with Mrs. Teitjen once a week.  Science concepts are incorporated throughout the year during everyday instruction.

15 Music and Art  Students attend Music with Mrs.Goodale once a week.  Students attend Art with Ms. Imperale 3 times a week.  In addition, Art and Music are integrated into the daily classroom routine.

16 Classroom Community  Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other.  Our class rules are:  Be nice to others.  Raise your hand to speak.  Use walking feet.  Use quiet voices.  Sit criss cross applesauce on the carpet.  Follow directions.

17 Homework  Students will be assigned about 15 minutes of homework every night.  Homework is a reflection of what we are studying in class.  Homework will include Fundations and Math Monday thru Thursday.  Please read every night with your child and review sight words.

18 Field Trips  We have lots of fun field trips planned for this year!  We will attend two plays at the West Hampton Performing Arts Center as part of our reading units.  We will visit Hank’s Pumpkintown and take part in their farm informational tour as part of our science unit on the life cycle of a pumpkin.  TBA- Spring final field trip
