6 Common Core The standards are designed to be robust and relevant to the real world, reflecting the knowledge and skills that our young people need for success in college and careers. With American students fully prepared for the future, our communities will be best positioned to compete successfully in the global economy. The standards are rigorous, require application of knowledge, and provide a foundation for later success in middle and high school. The standards are aligned from kindergarten through high school. 11 How you can help with reading at home… –Take home reading – independent reading level Make it ENJOYABLE! Prompt for strategies Put the work on the child COMPREHENSION – authentic retelling discussion (retelling hand)

12 Before the Read Look at the pictures before reading the story. When your child is stuck, say: “Look at the picture.” “What would make sense?” (meaning) “Does that sound right?” (grammar) “Does that look right?” (Do the letters match the word?) Read it again and get your mouth ready for the first sound.” “Look for a chunk you know?” (groups of letters) “Try something, and keep reading for more information.” “Reread the sentence.”

17 Level 1 – Students performing at this level do not exhibit sufficient mastery of first grade knowledge and skills successfully to complete most assignments. Level 2 – Students performing at this level demonstrate inconsistent mastery of knowledge and skills. Level 3 – Students at this level consistently demonstrate mastery of grade level concepts and skills. Level 4 – Students at this level consistently perform in a manner that is clearly beyond the grade-level requirements and expectations.
