Back to School 2014

About Me  8 th year at CCA  17 th year in Education  From Colorado  Math degree from CSU, Masters from GWU  Married with 2 kids (Hazel & Alexander)  CCA Womans Varsity & JV Coach

Course #1 Goal  Inspire students to learn more about Computer Science and the technology they use every day.  I have found that the students are excellent at using and working with technology, but they do not always know how it works.  I feel that learning how to read and write code will be an extremely valuable skill no matter what field the students ultimately work in.

What we will do…  Develop a portfolio in the form of a small scale web site  Learn Basic Programming concepts with Scratch  Apply what is learned with Scratch to write programs in Python to analyze data  Learn Computer Science Problem Solving strategies and algorithms with a Java based program called Jeroo.  Write basic web based applications with HTML5

How to do well in the class  Complete and turn in all assignments on time  Ask for help when needed and before the due date  Participate during class instruction  Review posted materials and resources start.sduhsd.net

Late Assignment Policy Any assignment not turned in during the class period on the due date will be considered late.  Students must complete and turn in a Late Assignment Grade Request Form in order for that assignment to be graded.  A grade of 0 (zero) will be given for assignments not turned in or attempted.  Partial credit may be given for Late Assignments turned in within a week of the due date.  Full credit may be given for Late Assignments due to an Excused Absence within a week of the due date.

Help…………. I am available before school and during lunch  Students should contact me if they need assistance on assignments or if they would like additional time on class  Communication is key – I encourage the students to contact me if they are struggling with any of the concepts cc.sduhsd.net/subsites/Michael-Remington

What is Next…  This course is meant as an introduction to programming and Computer Science  Students who have a strong understanding of the programming concepts are encouraged to take the AP Computer Science course next  For those who would like to have a little more experience programming I suggest taking The Computer Science Principles class then the APCS course.

Welcome As always at CCA I am really enjoying the opportunity to work with the students. We are off to a great start and I look forward to every day. Please contact me via if you have any quesitons.
