Education/Background University Nevada of Las Vegas/Undergraduate degree in Business Administration University of Phoenix/Masters Degree in Education Masters Degree (+36) Highly Qualified in Science Teaching for 13 years 10 years at Del E. Webb

Contact Information Email: sjessy@interact.ccsd.net Email (anytime) 6th grade Science

Communication Infinite Campus is our online grading and communication system Infinite Campus is a great tool for students, parents, and teachers Upcoming assignments, up-to-date grades, assignment descriptions, and comments I encourage students and parents to use Infinite Campus to view upcoming assignments and personal comments For parents-this is a great way to stay informed

Web Page My web page is a work in progress. Throughout the year, I will be adding useful links and assignments to help your students with different concepts in our curriculum. *This ppt. is currently posted on my web page for future reference Science Syllabus Discipline Plan Homework Policy Extra Credit Assignments http://my.ccsd.net/sjessy/

Materials Needed (most students already have these materials) 2 Composition Books (one for each semester) Students will know this or refer to this as their Science Notebook Pencils Notebook paper

Grading System Assignments weighted: Test 60% Labs, Project, Classwork 30% Homework, Practice Work 10%

Del Webb 6 th grade Late Work Policy Students will be deducted one letter grade from the original grade earned, if the assignment is one day late. Students will be deducted two letter grades from the original grade earned, if the assignment is two days late. Students will earn half credit for late homework assignments after 2 days, until the end of the unit. Students’ grades are based on total points earned- late work is better than no work

Science Grades Students can earn points from the following assignments: Practice work/Homework Classwork Quizzes Tests Technology Assignments Lab Investigations Notebook Checks Projects

Extra Help Opportunities I am available to offer extra help, clarification of assignments/labs, and study help for quizzes/test to students during: Before School in the morning from 8:00-9:00. A pass will be required, students must make me aware that they are coming in.

Homework HOMEWORK HOTLINE- (702) 799-5111 Homework/Practice work can be expected 3-4 times a week Reviewed concepts should take no long then 10-15 minutes per night

Science Overview We begin the year with lab safety, the scientific processing skills “Scientific Process Skills” include (observations, making inferences, experimenting, measuring, communicating, etc.) Nevada has adopted the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Curriculum based on science, technology, and engineering practices.

Major Units of Study Matter and Energy Concepts to understand: States of Matter Solid, Liquid, Gas, Kinetic energy, thermal energy and temperature. How they are all related and how they are related to the states of matter. What is required to change from one state of matter to another state of matter?

Major Units of Study Weather an Climate Concepts to understand: The general distinctions between weather and climate. Weather measurements The earth's climate has changed over time and will continue to change. How do we collect data from past climate changes and gathered sources beyond long-term weather observations?

Major Units of Study Human Impact Concepts to understand: Human population growth: Number one environmental problem. Sustainability: Long-term objective. Is it possible? Systems and change: Earth environment is made up of many different. Interconnected systems, many (if not all) capable of being changed by human activity. Hazardous earth process: Have always occurred. Are they hazardous to us only if we allow ourselves to be affected by them?

Major Units of Study Cells to Organisms Concepts to understand: All known living things are made up of cells. The cell is structural & functional unit of all living things. All cells come from pre-existing cells by division. Cells contains hereditary information which is passed from cell to cell during cell division. All cells are basically the same in chemical composition. All energy flow of life occurs within cells.

Major Units of Study Cells to Organisms Concepts to understand: The organization of the human body Structures and Functions of the organ systems Interdependency of the body systems

Textbooks. Currently at this time Science 6 does not have an adopted textbook based on the new NGSS Curriculum.

Enrichment Opportunities Inquiry Investigations Connections to Real life science Enrichment homework assignments Post-lab Enrichment Problem Solving Cooperative learning experiences Extra credit assignments will be posted on my website throughout the course of the year, one extra credit assignment per quarter.
