By: Prof. Aicha N. Robinson MSgt Nicole Barkley The Realities of Technology in the Classroom

Agenda The Reality of Now Students and Their Views The Reality of the Future?

The Reality of Now Assumptions: - Technology is seen as an important factor in teaching - Technology isn’t being used to the fullest extent possible

The Reality of Now Survey says:

Comparisons

Do you believe that adding technology to the classroom improves student learning? Students’ Response Teachers’ Response

Does technology enables better instruction? Students’ Response Teachers’ Response

Comparison

Students and Their Views “Using technology has helped a great deal for me especially considering so much of the listening material is dependent upon it. The i-Pod and i-Touch have given convenient access to language material. Computers have become essential for research and presentations. And online courses such as Lingnet and others have become extremely helpful for maintaining language. “

Students and Their Views “It can be used as an aid for organization of course material as well as provide an extremely large number of course material to both teachers and students. Technology helps to facilitate the learning/teaching process (i.e. internet sites, desktop folders etc.). But language can be taught just as well with pencil, paper and qualified instructors.”

Students and Their Views “For listening exercises the ability to slow down and isolate passages is invaluable particularly when the speaker has a strong accent. In some cases an online dictionary is much easier to use effectively than the green dictionary we’ve all been using for years.”

Students and Their Views “Using as many various technologies as is possible gives a wider range of skill sets. Each technology will be stronger in a given area of language study, from being highly interactive to being direct instruction to focusing on reading or listening or speaking or writing or translation.”

Students and Their Views “Being able to adapt learning material to current issues and situations is an important aspect in teaching the language. Technology allows the classroom to remain fluid in course content which helps in exposing students to the widest variety of vocabulary and speaking practice.”

Students and Their Views “Having MP3s available for listening is great. I put them on my i-Phone and I listen to them on the train. That is very helpful. In other areas I think good student teacher interaction is more important than technology. Bad teachers are still bad when they use technology and good teachers are good without it.”

The Reality of the Future? How will we as instructors implement technology that our students use in the classroom?
