HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ (It allows schools to) combine small classes in order to continue offering courses that would normally be cut due to small enrollments. Availability of “orphan” courses for students in small schools and a broader education. Movies work well and the technology is great for showing and demonstrating things. The ability to reach out to many schools and students and teach a rare course is amazing. I enjoy having a variety of students and exposing my home students to new experiences. Students in remote sites have opportunities they would ordinarily not have. The ease of going back and forth between the document camera, the student camera, teacher camera and other components. I enjoy the interaction with other schools. 1. What are the strengths of distance Learning? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Dealing with discipline issues. Some schools have outdated computers and equipment. The equipment, at times it is difficult to hear while others are talking. Classroom control is harder as you need to focus on different sites. Students not being cautious near microphones. Courtesy. Difficult to adjust to other school’s policies. No immediate hands on for working with students work. If a weak academic student takes a course like this they are not going to do well and they will get frustrated very quickly. This year my schedule only allowed one visit as I had to miss a whole day of school. 2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Better communication with students – I had some who on the 1 st day of class had no idea the class was distance learning. I guess more effort by guidance to inform students. Built in group meeting days where all of the students and instructors are in the same room at once on the same day. Require email services for all students for assignments. Use “Blackboard” (interactive web-based course delivery system) for assignments. Scanning and transmitting digital documents instead of faxing. Have all the classroom sites equipped with identical technological capabilities. Sometimes discipline at remote sites was uneven, especially if the trained aide was away. Substitute aides often had a hard time with discipline or technical issues. There should be more uniform enforcement of the rules. 3. What changes would you suggest for distance learning classes? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I was actually ahead of my usual schedule. More subject content was accomplished. The unexpected personal interaction between all peers. At the remote site I was teaching to, actual teachers were used instead of aides. It was somewhat unnerving to be in the company of those individuals – not used to having other teachers in the room. The unexpected lasting student/teacher bonding. We made slower progress than was made in past years. 4. Are there any outcomes from teaching this course that you had not expected? Comments

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Power-Points and Internet. I maintained a class website. Elmo for notes. VCR for taping lessons. (I used to use 35mm slides) All my work is now on Power-Point presentations and I email tests. Comments 5. Did you use any new instructional methods to effectively teach in the DL classroom?

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I used the fax and email to communicate and arranged a field trip to bring the groups together. I offered my email, instant messenger and phone number to remote site students. I used email for a student who needed to miss class for an extended period of time and the telephone to communicate with guidance counselors in the other schools. I would like to use email but it is not available to some students. We hold after school review classes for host and receiving sites. I was in constant contact with distance learning aides through phone and email. Phone and email is not a good method for students. I would like to have the “Blackboard” (interactive web system) set up and running. Comments 6. Did you use any other forms of communication with the students in addition to daily …... distance learning classroom instruction (such as e-mail or telephone)?

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support Comments 7. Did you visit your remote sites? No Yes No response

HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey 2004 – 2005 School Year... BOCES Distance Learning Program Quality Access Support ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________ I wasn’t able to get away but I brought my remote students here for a visit. Yes…the advantage is being able to hear and experience what they encounter everyday. It was good to see their environment. Yes, in the fall. Visiting the site gave me a personal feel for the students. Yes, three times meeting students face-to-face. About every two to three weeks I would visit one of the schools. Yes…visitation is very important. …once before the school year started and once each quarter. I got to meet and see the students but I also missed a lot of class time with other students and classes. Comments 7B. What were the advantages / disadvantages to visiting your remote school(s)?
