The National Apprenticeship Service The National Apprenticeship Service (NAS) has end to end responsibility for Apprenticeships within the Skills Funding Agency (the Agency), an agency of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills NAS offers specialist support for employers wanting to engage in skills development, including the delivery of high quality Apprenticeships The role of the Skills Funding Agency is to fund and regulate Further Education and skills for adults

3 What is an Apprenticeship? A work-based training programme designed for employers by employers, leading to nationally recognised qualifications. To up-skill existing staff or bring in new recruits. Offered at three levels: – Intermediate Apprenticeships (Level 2) (5 GCSEs A-C) – Advanced Apprenticeships (Level 3) and (2 A-Levels) – Higher Apprenticeships (Level 4 and above) (HNC/HND/Degree) Usually lasting from one to four years. There are over 250 types of Apprenticeships suitable for hundreds of job roles from accountancy to animal care to engineering and construction.

The Apprenticeship Framework

Funding from Government for Training costs = 100% age Training costs = 50% age 19+* The apprentice’s wages are paid by their employer Each apprentice must have an employer and be paid. About 130,000 workplaces in England have apprentices Each apprentice must have a registered training provider There are 1,100 providers in England Government funded apprentices must study one of 200 Apprenticeship ‘qualification framework’ areas. Frameworks are currently at levels 2, 3, 4 or 5 * Up to a maximum of 50%

NAS – Statement on Quality Requirements for a high quality delivery model The key areas are: Equipping individuals with the new skills and learning they need for their job roles and future employment and progression. Employment is a fundamental part of an Apprenticeship. The minimum hours of employment for an apprentice should be at least 30 hours a week. All Apprenticeship Frameworks are linked to specific job roles or occupations. Duration of the Apprenticeship – 12 months. Apprenticeship Agreement – 6 th April 2012

7 How do I find an apprentice? National Apprenticeship Service Apprenticeship vacancies “Apprenticeship vacancies is a free, simple to access*, simple to use, vacancy service that allows employers seeking an apprentice to access a wider pool of talent or individuals to seek and apply for Apprenticeship opportunities in their chosen sector. * vacancies can only be advertised on the website through a provider.

Apprenticeship Performance National Apprenticeship Service Apprenticeship starts by Sector There are nearly 250 frameworks offering 1,200 roles. AGE 16 to 24 – Employer Update Overview National Apprenticeship Service In November 2011 the Government announced the Youth Contract - a £1 billion package of support to encourage small & medium sized businesses to employ young people The National Apprenticeship Service will provide up to 40,000 Apprenticeship grants (AGE 16 to 24) of £1,500 to organisations employing up to 1000 employees recruiting 16 to 24 year old apprentices Eligible employers are those that have never employed an apprentice before or who have not been in a position within the last 12 months to commit to employing an apprentice again
