DANUBE WATER PROGRAM Proposal for a Train the Trainer Program (Water Supply Division) Vienna, 17th/18th February 2014 Heinz-Jürgen Brauch und Florian R. Storck

OBJECTIVES Improve and strengthen technical capacity of water supply utilities Train representatives of national associations and institutions Update technical expertise and performance to achieve the EU standards Customized training courses related to practice by Austrian and German experts as well as from IAWD

SCOPE OF WORK Train and qualify technical experts as trainers for their national associations and institutions Compile technical documents and papers for the individual training courses Prepare technical contents and subjects in cooperation with trainers and participants Organize the training courses in Vienna in collaboration with IAWD

TRAINING Compendium training courses (3 days) Water abstraction and water management Water transportation and distribution Mechanical and electrical installations in waterworks Water chemistry and water quality Water treatment Water use/household installations Customized training courses (1 day) Spring water supply Membrane processes Adsorption processes Risk management for water utilities

WATER ABSTRACTION AND WATER MANAGEMENT Content Hydrogeological basics (groundwater flow, water quality, pumping tests) Water prospecting and exploitation (drilling methods, well construction) Well operation and maintenance (well management, aging, regeneration, rehabilitation, deconstruction) Groundwater management (resources, monitoring, sampling, risks, protected areas) Regulatory framework

WATER TRANSPORTATION AND DISTRIBUTION Content Basic planning, strategy, design (pipe networks, costs, fire water demand, bidding, allocation, pipe management) Components and materials (materials, corrosion, pipes, stop and regulating valves, equipment maintenance) Construction (underground, pipe and surface treatment, leakage tightness tests, initial operation) Operation (water losses, damages, inspection, documentation, water metering, flushing, action plans, stand-by services)

MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL INSTALLATIONS IN WATERWORKS Content Conveying systems (radial pumps, electrical drives, fittings, valves, pipes) Planning and design of conveying systems Process monitoring and control technology (automation, control engineering) Operation and maintenance (safety at work, humidity removal and aeration, maintenance and investment strategies)

WATER CHEMISTRY AND WATER QUALITY Content Water cycle and water usage (suitability of water resources, natural compounds and man-made chemicals, national and international regulations) Fundamentals of hydrochemistry (redox reactions in aquatic systems, interactions between air, water and soil, carbonate balances, hydrochemical composition, water constituents and concentrations) Water Quality (quality parameters, sampling, monitoring strategies, analytical aspects, quality control) Microbiological parameters (determination, data evaluation and assessment, action plans) Inorganic parameters Organic parameters

WATER TREATMENT Content Basics of water treatment processes (chemical and biological aspects, natural and technical processes) Removal of particles (flocculation, filtration, micro and ultra membrane filtration) Removal / inactivation of bacteria, pathogens and viruses (disinfection, UV-radiation, particle removal) Removal of dissolved inorganic species (iron, manganese, hardness) (softening, decarbonization, ion exchange, nanofiltration, reverse osmosis) Removal of organics (NOM, pesticides, emerging substances) (oxidation, adsorption, biological filtration, nanofiltration) Planning and design of water treatment facilities Perspectives and challenges (energy efficiency, carbon footprint, combination of natural and technical processes)

WATER USE / HOUSEHOLD INSTALLATIONS Content Importance of technical regulations Hygienic problems in household installations Legionella problems in domestic hot water installations Fittings, materials, connections, valves, tapware Corrosion (causes, water quality, mitigation and abatement measures) House and apartment water meters

ORGANIZATION 3 – 5 representatives from each country (national associations)  Highly qualified as engineer, scientist, hydrogeologist, technical expert) Venue: Vienna Timeline Summer 2014: Identification of key topics and trainers, working on detailed training program Autumn 2014: Preparation of documents, papers and hand-outs for the training courses in English language Winter/Spring 2015: Starting with training courses Summer 2015: Finalization of training courses and evaluation of follow-up activities

SUMMARY / OUTLOOK To improve water supply sector technical expertise and know-how essential Train the trainer program will support both technical capacity of water utilities as well as technical leaders, engineers and scientists to achieve EU standards These goals can only be achieved by training and qualifying technical experts Vision: Trained experts will spread their knowledge to their national associations and colleagues. Overall water supply sector has to be upgraded particularly in minor cities and rural regions
