Henri Matisse

Henri is known for his use of patterns and texture in many of his paintings. The walls, screens, and fabric patterns create texture on the flat surfaces.

Here is a freer style of texture and patterns

Can you see similarities between Matisse’s art and this work painted by Gustav Klimt?

Many artists used their family as models.

Inside the artist’s home with pets

What was Henri thinking as he watched his goldfish?

Henri Matisse grew too weak to paint, so he would use cut paper for his colors and shapes.

This is a cut out of the sky This is a good example of rhythm and movement. Can you hear the wings flapping?

This is called “Icarus”. Do you know the story of the man who tried to fly with wax holding feathers together for wings?

Some of his cut designs were used for stained glass window designs for a Chapel.

Matisse’s designs were simple and lively.
