2 I can learn about the life and art of Henri Matisse.
Objective I can learn about the life and art of Henri Matisse. I can use symbols and simple shapes to tell a story or create an interesting composition. Why does it matter? So I can learn how to create art that is symbolic and simple, and communicates my feelings. So I can challenge my brain and learn new ways to make art.

3 Who was Matisse? Matisse was born in 1869 in France.
He is one of the most famous artists of the 20th century. He was often referred to as the master of color. He worked in a variety of media, including, painting, sculpture, paper cutouts, and printmaking.

4 His family Matisse’s parents owned a grain shop. His mother worked a part of the store that sold paints. Matisse’s father wanted him to take over the family business. Matisse was not interested in the shop or in art as a young child.

5 How he began to love art In 1887 he went off to study law.
He got sick with appedicitis and was bed-ridden for a long period of time. His mother brought him some paints for him to use while he was in bed to keep him busy. From the moment he held the paints, he was in love with art.

6 1896 The Maid 1910 The Goldfish Matisse painted for several years, moving from very detailed works to less and less details as he aged.

7 Paper Cutouts In 1941, Matisse was diagnosed with cancer and had to be put in a wheelchair. With the help of an aid, named Lydia Delectorskaya, he was able to make paper cutout art that had very little detail, but was full of color and energy.
