3. Then one day, Henri became sick. He had to stay in bed for a long time. His mother gave him paints and brushes to give him something to do. That was it for Henri! He knew he wanted to be an artist.

4. Woman With A Hat Matisse was a painter for most of his life. His paintings were colorful. His bold use of the elements of art were used to express the emotions that he was feeling. In a sense, color becomes the “subject” of the picture.

5. Henri Matisse Matisse was not a healthy person. Later in life, he became ill and was bedridden for the last 20 years of his life. He would tie a piece of charcoal on the end of a fishing rod and would draw his ideas on pieces of paper mounted to the wall. It was now that Matisse created his famous paper- cutouts.

6. Here ’s how Henri made his cutouts: 1.First his assistants painted sheets of paper. 2.Then Henri cut out shapes. 3.Henri would change the way they were arranged on the paper. 4.The last step was to paste the cutouts down on paper.
