Delivering Equitable Care in Mental Health Services A Clinical Area Based Approach Itai Nyamatore Clinical Team Manager O.B.M.H.

AIM: To Change the documented negative experience of Black African and African Caribbean People using Mental Health Service to a positive experience by developing the equality & diversity skills and knowledge of the registered Mental health Nurses in an in-patient care unit.

PROJECT DESIGN FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS Problem – The Plight of the African service users Vision – Positive experience for the Service users Forces - Driving & Hindering Valuing the Forces Action Plan

IMPLEMENTATION Session 1- Introduction to the project Session 2 – National & local relevant policies Session 3 – Raising Nurses awareness of the plight of the service users Session 4 – Raising awareness of the challenges for the nurses & their role in acting, supporting, promoting and developing a culture of equality & diversity. Extra Session

PROJECT FORMATIVE EVALUATION Kirkpatrick Model Cognitive - Learning Affective - reaction Behaviour – implementation of what is learnt

FINDINGS The Nurses awareness on National & local polices that guide practice was increased There were moments of insight Behaviour - learning was implemented Delivering equality & diversity training within the clinical area facilitates the implementation of what is learnt. There is need to work with the senior workforce within the organisation

CONCLUSION Changing the status quo depends on the individuals attitudes and the value they place on the subject of equality and diversity. There is need to also work with the organisation and not only the individual members of staff in supporting and promoting a culture of equality and diversity.
