As the United States transitioned to a new century filled with challenges and possibilities, it experienced renewed ideological and cultural debates, sought to redefine its foreign policy, and adapted to economic globalization and revolutionary changes in science and technology.

 Iran ruled for past 25 centuries by shahs (kings)  : Election and rule of Mohammad Mossadeq.  Mossadeq nationalized US and British oil in Iran.  1953: US and Britain organized a coup to oust Mossadeq.  U.S. supported Shah (king) Pahlavi of Iran.  Radical Muslims forced the Shah into exile in 1979 and the Ayatollah Khomeini took over.  In exile, the Shah suffered from cancer.  Carter allowed him to receive medical care and political asylum in the U.S.  Iranians invaded U.S. embassy, taking 66 Americans hostages (Nov.1979-Jan.1981.)

 Reagan was a very strong anti- communist  Following Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and Boycott of 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Détente was done   Iran-Contra Scandal  Nicaragua  Sandinistas- Overthrew Government in 1979  Contras- Guerillas fighters against Sandinistas  1985: US sold weapons to Iran, a sworn enemy  In return, US gets $ and released American hostages in Lebanon.  $ from that deal went to support Contras, which was illegal.  Scandal broke in 1987.

 Glasnost – openness, allowed some freedoms for Soviet citizens  Perestroika – economic restructuring to improve the Soviet economy  The Soviet Union could not keep pace spending with the US.  Reagan and Gorbachev signed treaties limiting weapons.
