“FLIPPED LEARNING” LED BY: LEWIS MCKENZIE

WHO AM I? Sixth year teaching in the district. Taught Algebra 1 for three years before migrating over to the engineering program. All of my students weren’t successful in Algebra 1 previously. Attendance issues Knowledge gap issues Flipped Content made a huge difference Given the technology and resources now, can truly make a difference for all students to close knowledge gap and create further enrichment for others.

DEFINITION OF “FLIPPED LEARNING” “Flipped Learning is a pedagogical approach in which direct instruction moves from the group learning space to the individual learning space, and the resulting group space is transformed into a dynamic, interactive learning environment where the educator guides students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter.” Flipped Learning Toolkit:

RETHINKING SPACE AND TIME…. deeper-flipped-learning-jon-bergmann

FOUR PILLARS OF FLIPPED LEARNING  Flexible Environment – Physical environment arranged around group or individual work and flexible timeframes of learning.  Learning Culture – Shifts from teacher being primary source to being learner- centered.  Intentional Content – Choose content for student to learn on own and in-class time for active-learning strategies.  Professional Educator – Increased interaction with students during class and formatively assess and scaffold students. Citation: Flipped Learning Network (FLN). (2014) The Four Pillars of F-L-I-P™

GOALS (SOME OF MANY) Some goals I found during my research: Create sustainable, reproducible, and manageable environments for student- centered learning. Shift from a teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered learning environment. Understand how to personalize each class and increase time spent with EACH student. Increase student achievement, teacher job satisfaction, and course completion/pass rates. Case study at Clintondale High School outside Detroit Michigan Demographics almost identical to ours in HMCSD Amazing results!!

SAFEGUARDS in place for formative assessment and to be sure students have watched the video before coming to class. Not going to be PERFECT! Do the best you can. START SMALL and scale it up as you become more comfortable.
