“Crop, Insert, Share: Creating Free Interactive Video Lessons to Enhance Learning”. Jennifer Borgen & Elena Pipenko INTO Oregon State University

Agenda: The need for interactive video assessment tools Capabilities of Edpuzzle and Zaption Explanation of both tools Try it out! Questions? November 5, 2015 1

The need for interactive video assessment tools ESL students in Listening classes: There is not enough listening practice to improve listening skills Traditional note-taking on paper and answering open-ended questions can be boring Answering open-ended questions can be very ambiguous T eachers in Listening classes: Grading paper-based listening tests is very time-consuming The work can become monotonous and students lose motivation When a video is assigned as homework, there is no way to check if the student finished watching the video What are some ways to highlight important information in a video ? How can I identify patterns of mistakes my students make? How can I meet the needs of digital natives? November 5, 2015 2

Interactive video assessment tools are the answer to all questions! EdPuzzle and Zaption are 2 FREE websites that allow instructors to make interactive video assessments and assign them for students to watch. These tools ● modify face-to-face instruction ● enhance blended classes ● can be used in flipped classrooms 3

Current users: EDpuzzle ● 70,000+ users ● 80% of users in K-12 ● 20% in higher ed and others (hospitals, companies, etc.) ● 75% of users are from the US; the rest from 67 different countries Zaption ● 40% are K-12 ● 20% are higher ed ● 40% are from other institutions including training organizations ● Zaption’s interactive learning tours have been viewed by over 25,000 people (According to http://tlt.psu.edu/2014/09/15/hot-team-interactive-video-assessment-tools/_)http://tlt.psu.edu/2014/09/15/hot-team-interactive-video-assessment-tools/ 4

Capabilities of interactive video tools 1: The teachers can Search existing video from sources such as YouTube, Khan Academy, Vimeo, Ted, National Geographic Create your own video Place questions and feedback into the videos to create a better learning experience for students. Customize the exact video clip to assign, starting at any point and ending at any point to assign a specific “snippet.” November 5, 2015 5

Capabilities of interactive video tools 2: Record own voice over the assigned video for narration or to add additional information (in EdPuzzle) Embed custom assessment questions (true/false, multiple choice, open format) into the assigned video at any point on the video timeline Review individual student and course-level assessment analytics to identify % of students who have completed the assignment. Students can create their own video assessment projects as a class assignment. 6

Choose your video or upload your own 12

Add your questions in the video (drag and drop!) 13

Publish and Share 14

Analytics See which students have completed watching assigned videos See if the students re-watched any parts of the lecture Evaluate if students understood the concepts See “at a glance” how the class is progressing with the assignment 15

EdPuzzle: You can see the progress of the class and the progress of each individual student 16

Downsides: Creating video lessons can be time consuming The free membership doesn’t provide as many options as the paid one The site does not link to some LMSs Watching videos is primarily passive learning activity 23

What are the best practices for EdPuzzle and Zaption? Flipped classroom sessions: students can watch an assigned video before class time, and instructors can focus time in the face-to-face session based on the data seen in the analytics. Face-to-face classes: modify the typical top-down lecture: assign learning labs within the classroom where students work independently reviewing video material and answering questions in the assessments. assign it as homework used as formative assessment to guide the scope and sequence of material covered in class. 24

What are the best practices for EdPuzzle and Zaption? Online courses improve the use of video as a way to convey course content. By instructors adding questions to the videos, students become more engaged in the learning process and the learning becomes more active. Instructors should use the analytic data to achieve deeper learning (analyze the questions that were problematic) Skillfully crafted questions and interactions can allow for timely formative assessment 25

Try and play with both of them!! The more you use a tool the more you are able to see which one best fits your learners’ needs.
