The Flipped classroom April Petitt Region 5 ESC

3 Flipped Classroom

4 Where flipping began? Two chemistry teachers in Colorado
Johnathan Bergmann Aaron Sams Needed help with absenteeism Started with recording PowerPoint

5 Flipped Classroom

6 Why flip? Allows for real differentiation -- students are learning
at different paces Students miss important pieces of information from class even when they are “in class” Students are absent (sick, sports, field trips) and miss critical lesson elements Students “forgot how to do it” from class (or simply copy from a friend Helps struggling students by providing increased student-teacher interaction and student-student interaction

7 Perceptions From Teachers
2012 survey of 450 teachers conducted by the Flipped Learning Network: 66% increased standardized test scores 80% improvement in students’ attitudes towards learning Nearly 9 in 10 teachers reported improved job satisfaction

8 Teacher’s Role Changes
Responsibility for learning is now in the student’s hands. Face-to-Face time flipped from teacher-focused to student-focused. Focus of class time flipped from lower-order to higher-order thinking.

9 Benefits to students Pause, rewind, and re-watch lessons, truly learning at their own pace Receive instant feedback and teachers can spend more time helping students and explaining difficult concepts. Don’t have to worry about… Being absent – can access anytime anywhere Lesson being taught too fast to understand Getting stuck on homework problems Bored – content too easy Can focus on… Being active, responsible learner Working/collaborating with classmates Being in charge of their learning Working with concepts they need more support in

10 Traditional Classroom
Classroom comparison Traditional Classroom Flipped Classroom Activity Time Warm-up Activity 5 min. Go over previous night’s homework 20 min. Q & A time on video 10 min. Lecture new content 30-45 min. Guided and independent practice and/or lab activity 75 min.

11 Which lesson to start with?
To start flipping, identify place to start--- Do you have activity for class that you rarely have time to complete? What concepts or topics do students struggle the most to understand? What topics would students benefit from the opportunity to apply the concepts within the classroom where your expertise could guide them?

12 Traditional– Lab Class
Home Class #1 Quiz: Previous Concepts Lecture: New Concept Homework Class #2 More lecture: Collect Data Lab: Analyze Data Class #3 Lab Start of Class – review lecture Worksheet end of class Study worksheet solutions & Practice Quiz

13 flipped– Lab Class Traditional Flipped Home Lecture Class #1

14 Creating videos Videos Where will you get content?
Are you going to make your own videos? Plan lesson Record video – Edit -- Publish Where will you store video content you create? How will students access content? How will you assess what students have learned?

15 My suggestions Videos Interact with other teachers for sharing
Use other teacher’s lectures Use online videos – already created YouTube Edu Khan Academy Start Small Prepare Students and Parents Don’t increase student workload
