Year Four Autumn 2 Our Mountain Community Literacy Fiction – stories from imaginary worlds – looking at setting description and how this leads to action. Designing imaginary world characters and using these to create the middle of a story. Non-Fiction – Persuasive writing. Looking at the features of adverts including rhetorical questions, positive language, imperatives, exaggeration and causal connectives. Writing – VCOP grammar sessions looking at use of adjectives, connectives, openers, questions and exclamation marks (using Kung Fu Punctuation). How to use adverbs to start a sentence and how to write a metaphor. Reading comprehension – How to find evidence in the text and write answers in full sentences in their own words. Speaking and listening – listening to others and changing your views to take into account what they have heard. Handwriting – A range of groups to focus on individual needs moving towards all pupils joining letters correctly. Guided reading – pupils to take part in guided reading sessions with group targets. Numeracy Outdoor Maths - Investigating shapes in our surroundings. Number – Rounding numbers to nearest 10, properties of number including odd, even, place value. Written methods of addition and subtraction. Using inverse operations to check answers. Negative numbers. Fractions - Finding fractions of number and shapes and finding equivalent fractions. Multiplication and division – written methods. Shape and Space – recognising 2d and 3d shapes linked to their properties. Understanding the difference between regular and irregular shapes. Understanding the difference between different types of triangles. Times Tables – continuing with individual targets. Problem solving – solving 2 and 3 step word problems. Investigating different methods that can be used and choosing the best method. A range of ‘Speedy Sammy’ problems to help him solve problems in the quickest way. Art/DT Art – Pictures of habitats using paint. DT – Designing and creating food and equipment needed for a Mountain Community festival. Humanities History – Black history month. ICT – using ict programmes such as photostory and puppet pals to create adverts. Global dimensions Black history month – looking into the lives of significant people from black history and finding out the impact of their lives on those around them and our everyday life today. Science (inlcuding AT1) Habitats including classification of habitats and animals, key features of a habitat, identifying food sources and knowing the structure of the food chain. Keeping Warm including judging temperature, learning about insulators and how to record temperature. AT1 investigation – how to keep things warm (which is the best thermal insulator). R.E/ Music/ SMSC links R.E – How and why to religions celebrate including Eid, Diwali, Hanukah and Christmas. Creating our own festival for our Mountain Community. Music – Continue lessons with College Street on guitar and flutes. SEAL/PforC – Getting on and falling out – recognising feelings of ourselves and how to manage these feelings. Looking at the impact of our actions on others. What makes a good friend and how can we manage conflict with our friends? P.E. Indoor PE : dance - run by outside provider, focussing on movement in cannon and unison.
