Presentation transcript:

In today’s society we find, an ever-increasing global population that continues to shift to urban areas will require widespread adoption of sustainability. Demands for energy, drinking water, clean air, safe waste disposal, and transportation will drive environmental protection and infrastructure development. Society will face increased threats from natural events, accidents, and perhaps other causes such as terrorism. 1

Furthermore, we find poor conditions of the infrastructures in many nations, the occurrence of corruption in the global engineering and construction industry, the minimal involvement of civil engineers in the political process, the need to more fully embrace sustainability, the globalization of engineering practice, and the desire to attract the best and brightest to the profession. 1 Therefore, a vision needs to be implemented and created to help and guide the civil engineers of the future.

Adapt Anticipate Forward Thinking Commitment Integrity Trust Values

Entrusted by Society to: – Create a sustainable world – Enhance the global quality of life – Serve competently, collaboratively, and ethically as master; planners, designers, constructors, and operators of society’s economic and social engine—the built environment; stewards of the natural environment and its resources; innovators and integrators of ideas and technology across the public, private, and academic sectors; managers of risk and uncertainty caused by natural events, accidents, and other threats; and leaders in discussions and decisions shaping public environmental and infrastructure policy.

Education – Support from leaders in the schools to help motivated and obtain a great education – Increased Resources at schools so that one can implement and experience more from there education and fields of study – Critical thinking & Problem Solving abilities obtained through education in order to be more prepared for the workforce and the real world – Perspectives & Experiences, gained through education so that one can be more skillful prepared and knowledgeable in their field of study

Empowerment – Provide empowerment through leadership – Adapt to ones surroundings – Anticipate what's to come – Forward thinking in order to grow to ones full potential – Possess/Obtains the following traits as a leader Commitment Integrity Trust Values

That in the future, civil engineers will serve as master builders, environmental stewards, innovators and integrators, managers of risk and uncertainty, and leaders in shaping public policy through education and empowerment.

In summary one should be able to fulfill and see that the Vision sets an aspirational target for a new global state of affairs: Civil engineers will be entrusted by society to help achieve a sustainable world and raise the global quality of life. Civil engineers, as a body of professionals, will be master planners, designers, and constructors; stewards of the natural environment; innovators and integrators of technology; managers of risk; And leaders in shaping public policy, where “master” implies “leader” in both role and knowledge.
