THE STUDY OF LIFE All living things share the characteristics of life. Chapter 1

The Science of Life Biology  Bio—Greek word-Bios meaning life  Logy—Greek word-logos meaning study  What characteristics have you observed that are shared by all living things?  List:  How does biology relate directly to your own life?  List some examples of living things.

The Characteristics of Life  Made of one or more cells- the Cell Theory  Displays levels of organization-cells, tissue  Grows and develops  Reproduces  Responds to stimuli  Requires energy  Maintains homeostasis-a balance  Adaptations evolve over time

The Nature of Science  Science is a process based on inquiry that seeks to develop an explanation.  Theory-meaning/ define  Science vs. Pseudo-science- such as, astronomy/ astrology  List the branches: Cell biology, Genetics, Evolution, Animal behavior, and Ecology

Methods of Science  List the steps of the Scientific Method:  observe, research, form a hypothesis,  experiment, collect data,  analyze data-form a conclusion  How is a scientific investigation done?  Using the headings Collect Data, Analyze the Data, and Report Conclusion—write a paragraph about each of these processes..

Measurement-SI units  There is a need for common units  Length: millimeter, centimeter, meter, kilo  Mass: milligram, gram, kilogram  Volume: milliliter, liter and Area: L x W  Density: Mass/ Volume  Weight: Newton  Temperature: Celsius or Kelvin  Time: seconds

Experiment  Question: Would cans of diet coke and coke weight the same and will each float?  Research: read?  Form a Hypothesis:  Experiment:  Collect data  Analyze data and form a conclusion- repeat the hypothesis then answer the question

Questions  Do you have any questions?  Please list questions.
