Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: Shoot – Black & Shiny P roduct Shot: Thing category Shoot an object that is mostly shiny black. Make a fully life- like image of it. Take care to choose a good angle-of-view that shows all the relevant details. That angle is often the three quarter (3/4) view. Characteristics such as the shiny black surface, non- slip ribbed side, film advance knob, shutter slide-button, viewfinder, view port, and the lens should be easily seen by the viewer.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: Shoot – Black & Shiny L ighting Challenge: Showing all the user relevant detail is a combination of the right camera angle and the lighting. Lighting requirement is still a single source look-&-feel. And the light direction is about drawing all the characteristics such as the shiny black plastic, ribbed side, and both knurled film advance knob and the shutter button. The texture plastic handle and the glass (plastic?) viewport and lens should look like what they are as materials.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: Shoot – Black & Shiny C atalogue Shot: This ID-plus shot could be a solid catalogue shot. An ad shot of it should have more in-use quality. I might use this shot to sell my Brownie Hawkeye online…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: Shoot – Black & Shiny L ighting Set: Simple Light:Skylight Direction:Top Reflectors:Three white Left – slanted backLeft – slanted back Back – standing flatBack – standing flat Right – lying flatRight – lying flat The table edge is right next to the bottom crop. That would have allowed for another reflector to be used low in the front if necessary. And it also minimizes the table color reflecting into the object and affecting the color. Standard notebook (white) (white) White VHS tape box whitemagazinecover Teak dining room table

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: Shoot – Black & Shiny L ight Source Shot: This light source shot was flash filled at EC -1 to show the room but not to over light the room. Without the fill flash, the room would look Like the small Inset Image to the right. …….. If your are going to shoot indoor using Skylight, you must use flash fill to show the light source.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: Shoot – Black & Shiny C oncluding Thoughts: This was a very simple product shot but a lot of thought and production time went into it. And the thought was mostly about how to keep it simple and to share the process with you. Technical Stuff – If you don’t get in the way. The camera will create very cool images. As it to do something it’s not designed to do, it will probably not do such a good job for you.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: Shoot – Black & Shiny S ummary: Do your homework and pay your dues. Your job is to put enough problem solving thought into your project to keep the camera from tripping over your mistakes…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: Shoot – Black & Shiny R equirements: At the Art 115 level, your image must be well exposed, believable color, and both the focus point and DOF should be match up to maximize the illusion of sharpness. Yes, all your assignment image must be fully processed Photoshop ‘psd’ file with the 3 basic and other adjustment layers fully editable. By turning off all the adjustment layers, the camera original image must be available for viewing.
