Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I x Making Images

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I A nother Found Shot: You might know by now that I love found object shots. It’s totally opposite of my previous advertising studio photography experience. I get to take ordinary things and Make them into statements about the beauty of light, design, depth, color, and an image that you can touch with your eyes. Making Images: Manhole Cover

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I C amera Original: I do a lot in Photoshop but the image manipulation begins with the original shot. Composition is the starting point. And that is balancing the needs of the scene lighting and exact framing detail. Design and texture is very important elements in my work. Making Images: Manhole Cover

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I C amera Controls: It starts with having a clean lens and using a lens shade. I evaluate the scene Tonal range and adjust the camera Contrast accordingly. In this case, I set the camera to maximum contrast. I cropped off most of the writing but I chose to show all of the word DUCTILE. It hinted at what the object was, a manhole cover. Making Images: Manhole Cover

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I S ubject and Light: Detail from a rectangular manhole cover. Shot with direct sunlight (5/1/09 - 2:43 PM) coming from about the 10 O'clock angle. I lightly cleaned up the subject of unwanted debris. But most of the debris was left for the natural street-aged look. Making Images: Manhole Cover

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I E xposure: Balance of art & science I wanted all the incident highlight detail So I under exposed to retain highlight detail. The shadow detail in this case was going to be very dark to dead Black for design purposes. As expected, the general look of the Image and the exposure graph is that of an under exposed image. I could have easily under exposed by at least another.3 f/stop or more. Making Images: Manhole Cover

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I M etamorphoses: Capture to fully Made Camera Orig. Basic Lab WorkAdd Cast Shad. Final Enhance Lab work is a routine ‘move’. I often add a cast shadow when needed. I usually add it to emphasize the natural photographic design element already in the image. Making Images: Manhole Cover

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I DUCTILE Making An Image:

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I G et the Details: Since a shot like this is not naturally sexy, the details Must sizzle. In this show, the incident highlight detail looks soft, but it’s sharp as the rock detail in Photoshop and as a large print. Making Images: Manhole Cover
