Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Applied Design: More ideas P hotographic Design: Texture shot The shot was taken from a close enough distance to hide where the fir came from. Or whether the animal is alive or dead. There are enough shadow areas to suggest form or a shape to the creature. The dark areas are also acting as the negative space to work in shape, volume, and movement within the composition.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Applied Design: More ideas G ood Design: Any angle When good design is rotated to any angle, it should look good. Although mood, tone, movement, or emphasis will change. And

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Applied Design: More ideas P hotographic Design: Contrast This is also texture inspired shot. The fir shot felt somewhat soft. Something that you might want to touch. This one in contrast feels quite opposite. It does not invite me to touch it with my fingers.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Applied Design: Cover I mages Everywhere: Oak Tree Cinema Size of the image can matter when it comes to design characteristics of an image. The top was shot to show pattern but it looks more like line at this scale. The middle one is the same subject shot for perspective but it has strong line characteristics. I moved in close to the subject for the texture shot at the bottom. The next slide will show the lab worked versions which will show more of the design characteristics that I was after…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Applied Design: Cover M ake Your Images: Sing your song Even at the same small scale, the lab worked images show more of the design characteristics that I wanted. The top is starting to be more of a pattern shot. The perspective has been amplified by atmospheric haze in the middle one. And the last is an unmistakable texture. And without scale reference, it could be a landscape from Mars…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I L ab work: Even at Pattern: Augmented by both line and texture.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Applied Design: Cover S ection Summary: Shooting based on just design characteristics can easily become uninteresting to many viewers. So, to hold the viewer interest, a design shots must be superbly composed, lit by dynamic side lighting, and be done with superb technique. Adding design qualities to your usual shot will probably be an easier task. Enhance your story telling shots with strong design and composition.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Applied Design: Cover AIS: Grab shot While going between building to teach my next class at The Art Institute of Seattle, I saw this broken window. I stopped long enough to capture the shot. And I made it to my next class on time. But when I walked by the window on my way to my car, the glass was totally broken out…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Applied Design: Cover G rab Shot: Lab worked The top example is the camera original. The image is flat but it is full of image detail, which I like. I lab worked the image to bring up the image ‘Presence’. Big part of Presence is about increasing contrast. But just that move would not achieve the look&feel of the bottom image.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Applied Design: Example D esign Overlay: The bird form created by the broken glass is my focal point. The whole image is the subject. I used design qualities of line, texture, pattern, repetition, diagonal, spiral movement to enhance my Broken Flight story…
