Building the Tobacco Control Evidence Base Stephen Tamplin Associate Scientist Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health

Institute for Global Tobacco Control  The funding framework  Multi-country and country-specific studies  The Bloomberg Initiative to Reduce Tobacco Use  Focus on policy development and implementation  Driven by the World Health Organization’s MPOWER strategy framework  Country-specific Tobacco Control Research Networks in Bangladesh and Indonesia

The country-specific networks  The overall objective: To promote a research “culture” that motivates researchers, especially young researchers, to be engaged in research that enhances the evidence base for tobacco control.  Small short-term seed-grant projects that focus on priority tobacco control issues related to the MPOWER framework.  Projects that are relevant to policy development and implementation.

The way forward  Coordination and collaboration will be important  Effective partnerships  The Network needs to become self-sustaining  The Network needs to engage with the broader tobacco control community
