7 th Grade Bell Ringers From Texas to the White House President Lyndon B. Johnson began his academic career in Johnson enrolled in Southwest Texas State Teachers' College (now Texas State University – San Marcos). He worked his way through school but from 1928 to 1929, Johnson put his studies on hold to teach Mexican-American children at the (then) segregated Welhausen School in Cotulla, south of San Antonio in La Salle County. Later, when he became president, Johnson’s time spent at the school influenced him to create which Act designed to strengthen the educational resources of our colleges and universities and to provide financial assistance for students in postsecondary and higher education?
