First African American student enrolled in Sul Ross State University

Attended the Morgan School in Alpine – the all black school Morgan School was closed as a result of the ruling in Brown v. Board of Education

Transferred to Centennial School for 7th and 8th grade Valedictorian of her class For most students, graduating from Centennial School was the end of their formal education.

Was one of the first African American students enrolled in Alpine High School While in high school she was the first black president of FHA Graduated from Alpine High School with honors

Applied to Sul Ross State University after HS graduation. Was denied admission Registrar explained it was “not legally possible”

Disappointed, she joined the Women’s Army Corps WAC was the women’s branch of the US Army, created in 1942. WAC was disbanded as a separate unit in 1972 and women were integrated with male units.

Returned to Alpine after serving a two year term. Applied to Sul Ross State University The registrar again told her that she could not enroll.

In 1963, a group of Alpine community members and Sul Ross faculty and staff united to help her gain admission into Sul Ross. They petitioned the Board of Regents to change the rule and open Sul Ross State University to African American Students.

11 Christine Young – First African American Lobo
On June 3, 1963, Young was allowed to enroll. Young was later appointed to the Alpine City Council for an unexpired term and later was elected city secretary.
