Why is the TBCSA hosting this workshop? Tourism is an important sector in our economy & the lack of skills is and will impede its growth National Skills Development Conference( Oct 2006 ) –Declaration & Plan of Action Signed A number of challenges were highlighted: –Improvement of the industry skills development coordination –Improvement of the knowledge base –Improvement of curriculum development & participation in education and training –SMME and community participation in education and training

Workshop Objective The workshop seeks to provide an industry perspective on the following areas:- Skills shortages - crucial and critical skills and future needs, Curriculum Offerings - current courses and curriculum offerings, Role of private sector - ideas and mechanisms for the private sector to play a more active role in skills development.

How will this objective be achieved? This workshop is offering members of the private sector the opportunity to unpack the challenges their organizations' face DEAT will make a presentation stating –Achievements since the Skills Conference in October 2006 –Update on the DEAT & Theta Skills Audit –DEAT’s Unemployed Graduate Programme –DEAT’s Internship Programme THETA presentation of their Sector Skills Sector Plan – what was presented to DoL?

Commissions Three Commissions will inform the outcome of this workshop: –Analysis of the Critical and Scarce skills within the Tourism Sector – what are these? –Review the Curriculum challenges and needs – what should the curricula be? –Review of the current accreditation system & grants – what are they and are they right?
