Mrs. Mazo’s 7 th and 8 th Grade Special Day Class Welcome!

Back to school night!  I will introduce you to this Special Education classroom.  If you have any questions please let me know at the end of the presentation.

All About Me  My background  I grew up in Richmond, TX.  I have attended  Harding Christian University: B.A. Elementary  UC Riverside: Learning Handicapped Specialist Credential  Chapman University: Master Degree Special Education and Specialized Instruction for Autism Spectrum Disorder Credential.  My experience  I’ve been teaching for 20 years.  16 years teaching special education, clearly it is my favorite.

Daily Schedule  1 st period – Success for School  2 nd period – Language Arts  3 rd period - Science  4 th period – History  5 th period – Math  Lunch  6 th period – Explore  7 th period – Physical Education

Community Based Instruction  Monthly Calendar  Working on Social Skills  Recycle  Our class collects the water bottles from lunch, empties them of any left over water and collects money from taking them to the recycling center once a week.

Classroom Community  Class rules are  Be respectful to others.  Always do your best.  Be responsible with your things.  Be helpful to others

Student Planners  Students’ planners will be filled out daily when students arrive in class.  The planner is a summary of the students’ daily activities and list homework.  I use the planner as a communication tool between school and home. Please feel free to write any notes in planner.

SRA Reading  SRA covers the Basic Language Arts Skills of:  Reading words in isolation  Reading comprehension  Grammar  Sequencing events  Prediction of events  Homework  Please complete the homework with your child.  Have your child try the homework first on their own, then help them correct it.

Excel Math  Math concepts are woven into a smooth and cohesive curriculum.  Students practice using concepts after the concepts are introduced.  155 Lessons: lesson, homework, guided practice and basic fact practice.  Test after every 5 lessons

Cross-Curricular Units  My goal to tie each students IEP goals into the districts History and Science curriculum taught at the students’ individual learning level.

Homework  I will assign about minutes of homework most nights (I try not to assign on homework Wednesdays).  Homework is due the next day unless otherwise noted.  Please allow your child to attempt their homework independently at first and then support them if needed.  I will always encourage you to have your child read aloud to you from a book of their choice. Reading out loud is one of the best ways to help a child develop their independent reading skills and a love of reading.

GRADES  Standard Scale  A  B  C  D  59 or below F
