Weekly Activities Language Arts -Reading *Emphasis on non-fiction texts integrated into all curricular areas-whole group *Literature units including both fiction and non-fiction *Small reading groups to work on individual skills and needs -D.L.R (Daily Language Review) *Complete in class on a daily basis *Weekly Friday quiz on grammar skills learned -Reading Log *Sent home each Monday to be returned and signed by parent the following Monday. Minimum expectation is 4 days a week for 15 minutes each night. -Accelerated Reading (AR) *Independent reading program based on ability level *Trimester goals are set with students individually. *Books can be read individually or with parent help and should be at grade level. *You can check your child’s progress online.

Weekly Activities - Spelling *No weekly spelling list sent home. Activities completed throughout the week to reinforce spelling, phonics, and grammar skills. *Spelling tests given using cloze sentence paragraphs and phonics skills. -Writing * Students will engage in 4 types of writing styles: Narrative, Descriptive, Informational/Expository, and Persuasive. * Personal and formal letters, thank-you notes to show and awareness of the audience and establish a purpose and context. -Speaking Application *Students will be expected to share products they have completed (ie. Writing, art work, etc.). *Oral presentations will be assigned.

Weekly Activities Math -Students ability grouped between all 4 classes. -Incorporates multiple problem solving strategies, critical thinking skills, and writing. -Master multiplication facts to 12 (weekly timed test) Social Studies -D.O.G (Daily Oral Geography) * Complete 2 questions in class on a daily basis using an atlas/maps *Weekly Friday quiz Science -Robotics – Beginning program using Ollo Bug Kits.

Binder Reminders - All students are required to have a 3-ring binder that we will organized by subject areas during the first week of school. -Parent signature or initials are required each night in the binder reminder. Your child will have to pay classroom money if it is not signed. -This is an important part of the classroom communication and helps prepare your child for upper grades. -”Ask me about” (Great way to be involved with your child’s education.) Friday Folders -Students will bring home any corrected class work and school information in their folders each week. -Goes home on Friday and return on Monday Progress Report -Send home every other week on Fridays. -Includes any missed assignments and clip-downs for 2 weeks as well as parent information regarding upcoming events or classroom news. -Signed by parents and return on Monday Highlights

Homework -Given daily Monday through Thursday. -All homework is due the morning after it is assigned unless otherwise stated. Grading -Letter grades are given for homework, quizzes, and tests. Birthdays -Celebrations are encouraged and welcomed but birthday treats must be healthy treats for the class. -Alternatives to snacks may include a class donation of a game, book, dvd or activity that students can play in class. Book Orders -Send home once a month -Great way to buy inexpensive books for your child

“Batter-Up Kid” of the Week -Each student will have the opportunity to be the “Batter-Up Kid” of the Week.. -Your child brings in 5 photos of their choice and anything he/she would like to share. -In class your child will be interviewed with various questions about them. -Each student will then use that information to write a paragraph about the “Batter-Up Kid”. -As a culminating activity, you will be invited to come to class on Friday of their special week to read your child’s favorite book and share some special stories with the class. If you would like to bring a snack for the students on this day, please be sure that it is a healthy snack for the students to enjoy. Please make a note of the date and time of your child’s special day so that you can make arrangements in your schedule to be here to help celebrate them! Highlights
