REnescience at Amagerforbrænding By Project Manager Frank Hansen 2012

Agenda 1.Brief introduction to Amagerforbrænding 2.REnecience at Amagerforbrænding 3.Site visit REnescience

The owners of Amagerforbrænding Amagerforbrænding is owned by the municipalities of Dragør, Frederiksberg, Hvidovre, Copenhagen, and Tårnby inhabitants companies and institutions

Business activities Waste to Energy plantRecycling Landfill 4 9 recycling stations Co-owned with Vestforbrænding Production of heat and electricity tons in % is recycled - 24 % is incinerated - 3 % is deposited tons in District heating since Electricity since Heat supply for households - Power supply for households tons in 2009 Environmentally safe landfill

Amager Bakke State-of-the-art environmental performance Modern and flexible design Urban integration Flagship Waste to Energy

REnescience –waste refinary Renewables, Science and Renaissance of the energy system The objective of the REnescience project is upgrading of household waste for optimal use of the energy content and of the basic elements –with least environmental impact. Sponsored by

Project goal Household waste REnescience is waste refining The goal is to develop a continuous process that adds value to the waste through : 1. Liquefication of the bio- degradable fraction for optimal separation and utilisation 2. Recycling of metals, glass and plastic 3. Energy recovery of burnable fraction Separated in recyclable, bio- degradable and burnable materials Recyclable Metals Glass Plastic Bio-degradable Paper and card board Food waste Garden waste Burnable Wood waste Textile Plastic

Method for waste treatment of the future 8

Gain for society 9 High energy utilisation Possibility for storing the liquid fraction and use as needed - in term of time and location Production of a wide range of energy products i.e. biogas, bioethanol Biogas can be used for heat and power production feeding to the natural gas net work Transport Power production in existing plants– replacing coal/oil Saving ressources Metal, plastic and glass are recycled and not lost Soil improvement (nutrients are retained is residual from biogas production)

REnescience -refining of waste 10 Liquefication Water Heat Heat treatment 100 °C Enzymes Enzyme treatment °C Liquid faction Separation Household waste Recycling Metal Glass Plastic Separation Solid fraction Textiles, wood, plastic Energy containing slurry Solid fuel

REnescience – Technology spin-off 2005 Let’s see how this works out

Initial tests – batch reactor 50 kg batch processing with enzymes Solid fraction with metal and plastics. Liquid bioslurre suitable for biogas production

End products – after enzyme treatment Solid fraction consisting of plastics and metals Bio slurry

REnescience – pilot plant The enzyme reactor is 16 m long and has a diameter of 2,5 m In the heat reactor the waste is prepared for the enzyme treaement Vibration sieve for separation of the liquid and the solid fraction A pilot plant for treatment of 800 kg of waste per hour has been developed and build. Operation commenced in december The plant is located at Amagerforbrænding. 2009

REnescience – EUDP funded research project 2009 Elements of current investigations: 1.Washing and drying of solid fraction 2.Optimising autamatic controls 3.Long term operation of pilot plant (7.000 timer) 4.Reduction of enzyme consumption 5.Odour reduction 6.Recycling of solid fraction 7.Biogas production 8.Design og feasibility studie of 10t/time plant 9.LCA Life Cycle Analysis

REnescience – EUDP funded Research project 2009 Preliminary results: Biogas production: high biogas yields from bioslurry. Problematic contents of phatalater. Low concentration of heavy metals Enzyme process works well with ”un-sorted” municipal solid waste. Recycling of plastics not solved as yet. Difficult to seperate from rest of solid fraction. LCA: comparable with best practise within waste incineration. Odour problems needs to be solved. Glass cannot be recovered. Business case ??

REnescience – EUDP funded research project 2009 Preliminary design of 10 t/h demonstration plant :
