Registration Process: Day 1 Counselor presentations in English classrooms Day 2-4 Complete course selection sheet with teacher signatures Day 3: Counselors available for student questions Day 4/5 Turn in completed form ***VERY IMPORTANT*** Registration Dates to Remember: Week of February 2-6Registration with current 11 th grade Week of February 9-13 Registration with current 10 th grade Week of February Registration with current 9 th grade March-April 10 Verification forms given to students and changes returned to Student Services with no fee April 13 - June 5 Changes subject to administrator approval & $25 fee req After June 5 No changes made General Information (p.1)

Course selection sheets must be signed by both the student and the parent. Teachers will sign all course sheets. Students with less than the required average to sign up for core or foreign language classes will need a parent waiver. Please contact your child’s teacher via if you would like to discuss his or her recommendation. Students are required to choose AT LEAST two elective alternates in case of scheduling conflicts or else they will be chosen for them.

Classes and teacher assignments are based upon the requests we receive.  A registration verification form will be given out in March/April. Return these forms to Student Services only if you make any changes to your selections. No changes will be made by phone or . Mandatory schedule pick up will take place during the summer before school starts.  Dates and times will be mailed with the last report card. AP courses: Any student registering for an AP (Advanced Placement) course is required to take the AP exam at the end of the year. Please see the Shelby County High School Academic Guide for more information. General Information (p.1)

Eligibility requirements for extracurricular activities:  Please check with your coach or sponsor to confirm that all grades earned meet the eligibility requirements. Valedictorian/Salutatorian:  Only one student with the highest GPA will be named Valedictorian. The student with the next highest GPA will be named Salutatorian. All other students who attain a GPA of 4.0 or are in the top 5% of the graduating class will be considered Honor Graduates.

Graduation Requirements: Class of 2016 (p.2) 4 English 4 History 4 Math ◦ Equivalent of Algebra I ◦ Geometry ◦ One other math (Algebra II or higher) 4 Science 1 Physical Education ½ Health ½ Fine Art 1 Business Tech App/Career Prep 5 Electives =24 Credits Similar to Standard Exceptions: ◦ Advanced Level Math:  Algebra I  Geometry  Algebra II w/ Trig  One other math (Options p. 4) ◦ Advance Level Science:  Not to include:  Earth Science  Environmental Science  Zoology  Sports Medicine  Options on p. 5 ◦ 2 Years Same Foreign Language Standard DiplomaAdvanced Diploma Students must take the ACT WorkKeys as seniors.

Graduation Requirements All Grades EXCEPT Rising Seniors (p.3)  4 English  4 History  4 Math  4 Science  1 Physical Education  ½ Health  1 Career Preparedness (Computer)  3 CTA Electives (Career Technology, Fine Arts, or Foreign Language)  2 ½ Additional Credits = 24 credits Alabama One Diploma PLAN (10 th )/ACT (11 th )/WorkKeys (12 th ): Required ACT plus Writing will be given to all Juniors April 28, 2015 so if your student was planning to take the test again in April, you can hold off. PSAT is an optional test & it is recommended that students taking honors courses in the 9 th -11 th grades sign up for it. This test is given in October.

Advanced Placement (AP) Informational Meeting

AP Classes Advanced Placement courses follow a national curriculum that cover the extent of information, skills, and assignments found in the corresponding college course Students who perform well on the AP exam can receive course credit and/or advanced standing, but this is based on the college or university of interest. Cost ranges from $106-$131 ($91 exam fee + supply cost)

Dual Enrollment Opportunities Jefferson State Community College requirements: Students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (3.0 if students have taken Honors/AP Courses) and meet the minimum ACT score requirement in order to sign up for these classes - Cost per semester is approximately $390 tuition to Jeff State (subject to college policy) - A book per course must also be purchased 11 th Graders: Precalculus (both semesters required/dual credit)/Western Civilization I/Western Civilization II 12 th Graders: English Composition 101 & 102 (both semesters required/dual credit)/Psychology/Speech If a student wants information about other college opportunities for high school students such as UA Early College, they can get the information from a counselor when they meet individually.

Dual Enrollment Jefferson State tuition is due to CHS for the first semester before the school year begins (Date TBA). Tuition for the second semester is due to CHS before the end of 1 st semester (Date TBA). It is also necessary that students complete an online registration for each semester enrolled. Students should consult their prospective colleges and universities to determine if the credit is accepted by that college or university. Students are required to pay college tuition for dual enrollment classes, which is set by Jefferson State.
