Equality In Iceland men and women are by law supposed to have all the same rights. They have equal opportunities when it comes to education and work. In the Icelandic Parliament 50% are men and 50% are women. Iceland had the first female president in the world in Here we can see the equality and the visibility of women in politics. Discrimination is not acknowledged! Everyone is supposed to be equal.

Inequality Like we said before everyone is supposed to treated the same way but underneath are some problems. A man gets a higher monthly payment than a woman even though they are doing the same job in the same company! Is it fair that two persons with the same skills and education do not get the same salary? …and the only difference is their gender

Men are more often put in a higher position than women. In companies in Iceland there are way more men that are C.E.Os or have more responsibilities in a work place than women. The gender that is in a minority in a position is rather hired than the other if they have the same skills. If a man and a woman apply for a kindergarten position the man will be hired because in Iceland there are more female kindergarten teachers than male. This method is used to reach more balance in the labor market.

LGBT rights Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender We think that LGBT rights are pretty good in Iceland. We learn to have respect for everyone despite their gender or sexuality. Gay people have the rights to get married, and they have all the same rights as other people when it comes to jobs and work places. One of the biggest festivals in Iceland is Gay Pride, and it’s considered a family festival! However, gays do not have the permission to donate blood under any circumstances. Gay couples are able to adopt children. Even our prime minister is a lesbian and the first in the world!!

Studies show that sometimes homosexual people feel left out in school and school activities because the school system just expects everyone to be straight. This is called heterosexism. It is obvious that the National Curriculum should be adapted to the needs of all students, also the LGBT people.
