Presentation transcript:

Robert Hooke - uses the word “cells” to describe cork. Anton van Leeuwenhoek - observes tiny microorganisms with his microscope.

Matthias Schleiden - “all plants are made of cells” Theodor Schwann - “all animals are made of cells”

Rudolf Virchow - Cell Theory 1.All living things are composed of cells. 2.Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things. 3.New cells come from preexisting cells.

All cells have a cell membrane All cells are filled with cytoplasm All cells have some sort of genetic material

Prokaryotes – using Latin P&S prokaryote means before nucleus

Prokaryotes – Do NOT have Nucleus or organelles – Generally smaller and simpler – All bacteria are prokaryotes

Eukaryotes – using Latin P&S eukaryote means true nucleus

– HAVE nuclei – Also have dozens of other specialized structures called ORGANELLES – Can be found in single-celled organisms or multi-celled organisms – All plants, animals and fungi are eukaryotes

-No nucleus -Bacteria -Cell membrane -Cytoplasm -DNA -Has nucleus -Plants, animals and fungus
