1 Cells Unit Introduction
The Cell Theory and a bit of History Prokaryote vs. Eukaryote Kara Stevens

2 Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes
Objective: Students will differentiate between prokaryote and eukaryote cells through MSE diagrams and notes, a venn diagram, and a worksheet. Question: What is the difference between endocytosis and exocytosis?

3 How did it all happen? Anton von Leeuwenhoek: 1670’s
Robert Hooke: 1665 Looked at cork under an early microscope. He saw thousands of tiny, empty chambers. He called them cells. Anton von Leeuwenhoek: 1670’s Observed tiny organisms moving in pond water. He called them animalcules.

4 More History 1838: Mathias Schleiden, a German botanist (plant scientist) concluded: All plants are made of cells 1839: Theodore Schwann, a German zoologist (animal scienist) All organisms are made of cells 1855: Rudolf Virchow, a German doctor Disputed spontaneous generation Concluded all cells come from other cells 1862: Louis Pasteur Said microscopic organisms can be the cause of contagious disease

5 The Cell Theory 1. All living things are composed of cells. 2. Cells are the basic unit of structure and function in living things. 3. New cells are produced from existing cells.

6 All Cells Have: All cells are surrounded by a membrane
They contain DNA at some p0int in their life

7 Prokaryote Cells No nucleus DNA floats in the cell
Very small cells No nucleus DNA floats in the cell More simple (not many organelles) Single celled only (unicellular) Example is bacteria

8 Eukaryote Cells These have a nucleus that contains the DNA
They are large and more complex They contain many organelles (mini organs for the cell) Single celled or multicellular organisms Can be highly specialized (do many types of jobs). Ex: plants or animals

9 Prokaryote and Eukaryote Draw this!
Prokaryotic Cell Cell membrane Cytoplasm Eukaryotic Cell Nucleus Organelles

10 Quick, Make a Venn Diagram!
Prokaryotes Eukaryotes

11 Did you do it right? Eukaryotes Prokaryotes Have nuclei
Large and complex Have organelles Can be highly specialized Single celled OR multi-cellular Prokaryotes No nuclei Small and simple Single-celled Ex: All bacteria Cell membrane DNA at some point in life Have cytoplasm Ex: plants or animals
