1 7-1 Life is Cellular

2 The Cell Theory The telescope and microscope were invented in Holland in the 1600s Anton van Leeuwenhoek, a Dutch drapery maker was the first to do microscopic study. Robert Hooke, an English physicist, looked at slices of plant tissues in 1665 coined the term “cells” when looking at cork cells

3 The Cell Theory Derived from the work of:
Matthias Schleiden, a German botanist, concluded all plants were made of cells in 1838 Theodor Schwann, a German zoologist, concluded all animals were made of cells in 1838 Rudolf Virchow, a German physician, studies cell reproduction and concluded that all cells come from preexisting cells in 1955

4 The Cell Theory Three Principles
All living things are composed of cells Cells are basic units of structure and function in all living things New cells are produced from existing cells

5 Basic Cell Structures All Cells have the following:
cell membrane: a thin, flexible barrier around the cell cytoplasm: the gel-like material between the nucleus and cell membrane Genetic material: DNA

6 Basic cell structure Many cells also have the following:
Nucleus- contains genetic material Cell Wall- extra protection and support

7 Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes
smaller and simpler than eukaryotes Does not have a nucleus includes all bacteria 2. Eukaryotes Has a nucleus Has more organelles: specialized structures that perform cellular functions some unicellular and many multicellular organisms

8

9 Prokaryote vs. Eukaryote
