Built the first microscope and saw tiny organisms in pond water

3. Then, in 1665,
Robert Hooke
built a stronger microscope with a better lens and a light source
Observed cork under the microscope
Saw small “chambers” – called them CELLS

4. It wasn’t long before
Robert Brown:
- Discovered the Nucleus in 1831

5. Theodor Schwann (“Schwannimal”)
And…
Matthias Schleiden:
Concluded that all plants are made of cells in 1838
Theodor Schwann (“Schwannimal”)
Concluded that all animals are made of cells in 1839

6. Finally, in 1855,
Rudolf Virchow:
- Developed the Cell Theory

7. The cell theory states:
1. All living things are made of cells.
2. Cells make up the structure and perform all the functions of living things.
3. New cells come from pre-existing cells.
