1 History of Cells

2 Robert Hooke A British scientist
Build a microscope that allowed him to look at very tiny objects Sliced a very thin piece of cork and looked at it through his microscope

3 What did he see? He saw hundreds of little boxes or “honeycomb”.
Named the boxes “CELLS” or “little rooms” in Latin.

4 Anton van Leeuwenhoek A fabric merchant Looked at pond scum.
Discovered unicellular organisms. Named them“animacules” or “little animals”.

5 Theodor Schwann 1839 Matthias Schleiden 1838
A German scientist who studied cells. Concluded that all plant are made of cells Drawings of the first plant and animal cells discovered by Schleiden and Schwann. Theodor Schwann 1839 A German scientist that studied cells. Concluded that animals are made of cells

6 Rudolf Virchow 1858 German doctor
Discovered that cells could not develop from anything but other cells.

7 Cell Theory 1. All organisms are composed of one or more cells. 2. The cell is the basic unit of structure and function in all living things. Example: skin and nerve cells 3. All cells come from existing cells

8 Cell Characteristics All cells have 2 characteristics
1. they are surrounded by a cell membrane 2. They contain DNA (at some point)

9 Two Main Types of Cells Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells
Prokaryotic Cells Do not have a nucleus Smaller and simpler cells like bacteria Eukaryotic Cells Have a nucleus Are larger and more complex like plant and animal cells
